Previously we were updating our Advent Vega to install VegaComb. Let’s get right back to it where we left off… (I updated the third part in this series as it was a very long post, splitting it in two)
In the bottom left of the AUDI Window is a red section with text in it. If it goes green then you have already got the right drivers and don’t need to worry. I’m guessing it’s going to stay red.
- Click next step to get to step 3. The options and text on the right hand side of the AUDI window will become active.
In step 3 you can choose various things. One of them is a System Restore point which you should probably create depending on how paranoid you are. I didn’t bother with this. I went straight to…
- Click ‘Delete all Vega drivers’ – which does exactly what it says.
When all of that is finished and you’ve followed any prompts that appear you should…
- Click Part C, swiftly followed by ‘Just do it’. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be wearing Nike trainers when you click that
Right, sit back and relax, after a few minutes your computer will settle again and finish sorting out the drivers for your Vega and the Red text section in AUDI should now be green. If it isn’t you can restart AUDI, unplug and reconnect your Advent Vega and everything should be groovy. If it’s green you can continue to install Vegacomb, if not then try the next step anyway before looking for more help for AUDI here.
Ok we’re one step away from installing Honeycomb (VegaComb Beta) now, in Part 1 we downloaded the Super Simple Recovery Installer. Go ahead and unzip that to your directory on your PC.
If you browse into the Super Simple Recovery Installer directory that you just unzipped you’ll see a couple of batch files. You are looking specifically for one called Windows_Install.bat. What this does is send a few instructions over to your connected Advent Vega using the Android Debug Bridge. These commands set your device up so that you can use Clockwork Mod Recovery, which is a great piece of coding that allows you to install new versions of Android, or ROMs. If you double click Windows_install.bat you’ll see a black window appear with some text. Just watch it go, it won’t take long and as long as you don’t see a ‘Failed to Connect’, or ‘Couldn’t Find Device’ or anything like that then you’re done with this section/ If you do see any messages like that, try rebooting your PC and Vega and restarting this step. If you still have problems then the you need to go back 2 paragraphs and click the link for help on AUDI and installing the drivers. I suggest retracing your steps following this post first though.
If all has gone well then you can press Enter on your PC and the black window will close. We are now going to copy the ROM zip file onto our Vega. If you look at the Vega you should see in the notifications an entry for USB connected. Not the Debug one, the other one. Click that and then the button ‘Turn on USB storage’, this connects your Vega to your PC as an external drive, like a USB pen drive. In this case, the Vega allows your PC to access the MicroSD card in the Vega.
Open a Windows Explorer and copy over the VegaComb ROM zip file we downloaded in Part 1. You will want to rename it to update.zip after you have copied it over.
You can now eject the vega rom your computer as you would any other external drive. Once ejected you can turn off USB storage mode on the Vega.
You’ve finished with the PC now and can disconnect the Advent Vega from the USB cable. Keep the power supply connected to the Vega though because we’re about to update the ROM.
On the Advent Vega, browse to your applications. There you will see a new app called Recovery, Tap this and your Vega will reboot shortly presenting you with a text menu. We’re almost there!!!
The text menus is controlled with the following hard buttons.
- Volume UP – move to item above selection
- Volume DOWN – move down to the next item
- Back – go to previous menu
- Home – choose currently selected option.
Ok, so this is Clockwork Mod Recovery mode. This is flashed into your Vega until you go back to a Stock ROM, see Part 2, you can actually use this menu to try flashing various different ROMs for your Advent Vega, CM7 is nice and so is Corvus.
The process for flashing a new complete ROM is fairly simple. You want to move down the menu with the volume keys and choose both of the ‘clear cache’ options, selecting each in turn with the Home button. Once these are complete we have a Vega that is stripped of impurities and echos from the current ROM and is ready for our new version of Android. At last!
Using the volume keys to move down to Install ROM from Zip file. Press Home, then move down the next menu and choose update.zip. Pressing Home again and confirming the action will see Clockwork busy itself flashing your Vega. Exciting stuff huh?
Once this is complete you need to press the Back button a few times to get to the ‘top’ menu in Clockwork Mod again. Choose the first menu option, ‘Reboot your device’. When I do this it doesn’t actually reboot it just shuts down, so I find I need to hold down the power button for a couple of seconds to power on the device again after the shutdown.
Watch carefully to see if the screen gets power, if it does you know your new ROM is loading. The Vegacomb beta takes about 15 seconds to show you any boot image, so don’t worry if you don’t see anything straight away.
That’s it, you should have a lovely IPad/Xoom beating Android Honeycomb tablet. OK, it’s a beta and not everything works but welcome to the world of modding. Have fun! 
Next time I’ll show you how to update your VegaComb install to a newer version. I think we might have a play with some other ROMs, maybe CM7 as well and look at the ROM Manager app.
