If you’ve been following my series of beginner how-to guides for modding and flashing the Advent Vega you should now have an Android tablet running Honeycomb aka Vegacomb on your lovely Advent Vega. As I said before, Vegacomb is currently beta software and not all of it works just right yet, so let’s dig a little deeper and see what else is possible with this great device.
First things first, we don’t really want to lose all the hard work we’ve put in so far. We need to back everything up, this is really simple and starts with the usual list of downloads;
- Grab the free copy of ‘Titanium Backup * Root’ from the Android Marketplace or here if you want the apk directly.
- Download the amazing One Click Back & Restore, produced by @ZebraDroid.
These two applications do similar but also very different things and are both very useful indeed. Using them is shimples, even a trained monkey couldn’t mess this lot up, trust me
Titanium Backup is an application that runs on your Advent Vega, it is designed to back up your installed apps, all of the app settings like high scores, login information, everything. Not just that, it also backs up your system data making things much easier to recover. The app even has batch features to restore, for example, all newer app versions and saved data. This saves you loads of time when you switch between ROMs, basically you never need to grab everything from the Android Marketplace again. Neat huh?
Oh, before I forget, Titanium Backup also has scheduling features which will quietly work away in the background. This means your Advent Vega will always remember to backup up all your stuff, as long as it’s turned on.
Zeb’s One Click Backup & Restorer for the Advent Vega is equally impressive, if not more so. This application runs on your Windows PC and hoovers a copy of your current ROM, that’s everything that makes your Advent Vega unique, off into a directory on your PC. If you couple that with a copy of the microSD card in the Vega you have a full backup of the device that can be flashed back in the future.
Wait a second, think about that for a minute. That means you can run the One Click Awesomeness App from Zeb, and suddenly you can try all the other ROMs. When you’re finished you can just restore back to the package Zeb’s app has made for you and you’re back where you started. Sweet!
In the next post I’ll talk you through setting these up. After that we’ll be free to try some funky new ROMs on the Vega. See you after a coffee ![]()
