Ok, I’ve just finished my coffee but it took a little longer than expected and involved a weekend away in Cambodia and some other interesting things.
Anyway, this post is not about that. It’s about setting up Titanium Backup * Root so you can protect the valuable time you spent installing all those lovely apps on your Advent Vega, and all that data as well. However this only works if you are running a custom rom on the Advent Vega or have rooted your device. You will not get this to work if you are using the Advent Vega as it was when you bought it from the store, if you are then you will need a new rom first. At the very least you will need to ‘root it’. I’ll be covering rooting and lots of other roms in other posts but I touch on super user access in the 4 part ‘installing Honeycomb for Advent Vega’ on this site. I’ll assume your Advent Vega now has root and probably an app called SuperUser installed. Super User keeps track of all the apps you give root access to. I’ll also assume you know what all this talk about root is, if not you can read an over simplified explanation here. Ok, we know we need root for Titanium Backup as it accesses the private storage areas for all your other apps. It does this in order to copy their data and program files to a backup area. Android makes it hard (if not impossible) for this to happen without root.
Search for Titanium Backup in the Android Marketplace and download/install it. When you run it up for the first time one of two things will happen. Either you will get SuperUser asking you if Titanium can have root access, or Titanium will spit at you and say it’s not going to work because it doesn’t have root access. I’m going to go with the first option here and in the next post walk through Titanium Backups interface where we will see how to backup stuff and set up schedules.
